How much does a new website really cost in New Zealand?

If you’ve started looking into getting a new website built, you’ve probably noticed pricing is all over the place. One agency might quote $5000, another $30,000. The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all price when it comes to websites. The cost depends on what you need your site to do, how custom you want it, how future-proof it is and what level of support comes with it. But that doesn’t mean the website price has to be a mystery.

Here’s a breakdown of what goes into new website design and build pricing in New Zealand, and how to make sure you’re investing wisely.

The basics: what you actually pay for

When you pay for a website, you’re not just paying for a few pages of pretty design. You’re paying for:

  • Design – This is where your brand comes to life. A good design captures attention, builds trust, and reflects who you are as a business – as well as appearing modern and on brand for you. It’s about creating an experience that feels professional, cohesive and easy to use, so visitors actually stay and explore.
  • Development – This is the technical build: turning the design into a fully functional, fast and mobile-friendly website. A well-built site works smoothly behind the scenes, loads quickly, and is easy for you to update without breaking anything.
  • Content and copywriting – compelling words your audience understands that actually make people want to get in touch or buy.
  • Hosting and domain – keeping your site online and secure (this is a big one!).
  • SEO setup – making sure people can actually find you on Google.
  • Training and handover – so you can make small updates yourself (rather than an agency charging you for every tiny change in the future).
  • For a small-to-medium New Zealand business, a simple brochure-style website (say, 3-5 pages) will be down the lower end. If you’re looking at a custom eCommerce site (an online shop or functionality such as quoting), expect the higher end, depending on the number of products, integrations and complexity.

Cheap websites are like fast food – quick, but not good for you

It’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, especially when you see ads promising “a full website for $2000.” But in most cases, you really do get what you pay for. These budget sites are usually built from generic templates, with no real strategy behind the design, no future proofing, no way to edit them yourself, no way to upgrade them easily in the future, no SEO setup, and no consideration for how your business actually works. They might look okay at first glance, but they tend to break easily, load slowly and can make your business look less professional.

A good website should be treated as an investment – like a shop front, it’s often the first impression people get of your brand, and a well-built site can keep working for you (and getting you new customers or leads) for years. Spending a bit more upfront for something custom, stable and designed to convert your target audience will always pay off in the long run.

Choose a platform that can grow with you

One of the biggest mistakes we see? Businesses getting stuck with a website that can’t be easily updated or moved. Some agencies build sites on obscure platforms that only they can access – so if you ever want to change agencies, upgrade or even just make small edits, you’re out of luck.

At Webmad, we build our websites on WordPress – the world’s most popular and flexible website platform. It’s user-friendly, upgradeable and future-proof. That means you can add new features, update your design, or move to a new host later without starting from scratch. Don’t get pigeon-holed into a system you can’t control – make sure you’re choosing something that will grow with your business.

Make sure you actually own your website

It sounds obvious, but we’ve seen too many cases where business owners don’t actually own their own site or domain. If you can’t log in, don’t have admin access, or your agency “manages” your hosting and domain under their own name – that’s a red flag. You paid for it, so it should be yours

    So, what should you do?

The best way to get an accurate website quote is to start with your goals. What do you want the site to do? Who are you trying to reach? What features do you actually need?

Once you have that nailed down, we can help you choose the right platform, plan the right structure, and get a clear picture of cost – no jargon, no surprises.

Can your website agency own your website? What every business should know.

We’ve lost count of the number of business owners who’ve come to us saying “I thought I owned my website… until I realised I didn’t.” It usually starts small - you can’t log in to make a quick change, or you have to email your agency for every little update. Then you find out your domain is registered in their name, not yours. Before you know it, your own website is effectively behind bars, and the only way to get to it is through them.
