Can your website agency own your website? What every business should know.

We’ve lost count of the number of business owners who’ve come to us saying “I thought I owned my website… until I realised I didn’t.”

It usually starts small – you can’t log in to make a quick change, or you have to email your agency for every little update. Then you find out your domain is registered in their name, not yours. Before you know it, your own website is effectively behind bars, and the only way to get to it is through them.

It’s a bit like buying a car but having to ring the dealership every time you need the keys.

The red flags to watch for:

If you’re not sure whether you’re in control of your site, here are a few telltale signs:

  • You don’t have full admin logins for your website.
  • Your domain name is owned by your agency.
  • You’re being charged for tiny updates you could easily do yourself.
  • You can’t move to another provider without starting from scratch.
  • You’re tied to a website platform no one else can work on.
  • Why Platform Matters

We see this all the time: agencies building websites on obscure, “custom” systems that only they understand. It might work fine for now, but what happens in two years if you want to switch providers, they go bust, or you want to hire someone internally to make website changes? You’ll be stuck with a site you can’t move, on a platform that could become outdated overnight.

That’s why we use WordPress – the most popular website platform in the world. It’s widely supported, endlessly flexible, and future-proof. If you ever decide to move on from us (though we hope you don’t!), you can take your site with you and find thousands of developers who know exactly how to work on it.

Your website should be a long term asset, not a short term trap.

How we do things differently at Webmad

    When we build your website:

    ● You own it – all domains, logins and hosting are in your name.
    ● You get full access, no gatekeeping.
    ● We use WordPress, so your site is portable, modern, and built on a platform that’s here to stay.
    ● We’re transparent – clear pricing, no nasty surprises.

    Take back the keys

Your website should be yours, and it’s one of the most valuable tools in your business. Don’t let it be locked away where you can’t reach it.

If you’re feeling shut out or stuck on an outdated system, we can help you safely move everything over to a platform you truly own, and give you the freedom to run your site your way.

It’s your business. Your brand. Your website. And it should stay that way.

Considering switching website providers or want to start fresh? Send us a message here, we’d love to chat!

What Does SEO Cost in New Zealand?

If you’ve ever Googled “how much does SEO cost?”, you’ll know it’s a bit like asking “how long is a piece of string?”. The answer depends on what you need, how competitive your industry is, and how much work has already been done on your website. SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of helping your website appear higher in Google searches. It’s what helps people find your business online, without you paying for ads every time someone clicks. In short, it’s about making your website more visible, more useful, and more trusted in Google’s eyes. That means better traffic, better leads and more business for you.
